Bar end shifter cables

Halfway thru converting my Airnimal Joey from flats to drops. Just wondered, what people normally do with the cables when fitting bar end shifters?

Noticed rummaging around the bike picture thread that often the cables are loose. Was thinking of routing the cable under the bar tape and down the stem, seems tidier and less loose stuff to get caught when folding, but would need some longer cable (tandem bike gear cable?) and wonder if it would get irritating.

Mine run under the bar tape for about 4 inches then loop back onto the frame with enough play to allow full movement of the bars.

Running the cables under the tape for a few inches is the normal method. This is to keep the cable runs as short and bend free as possible so that you minimise the friction on the gear change. This is to help make the gear change as crisp as possible. Running the cables under the tape all the way to the stem will work I'm sure - just try not to get any sharp bends in the cables. Remember tandems often have bar ends - the cables are very long but they still work OK.

Hrmm ta, will have a pop at routing under the tape all things been equal. The cables I had weren't long enuff, which made me wonder if anyone did this, but have some from a roll now and some cutters to cut to spec. Yet another job that should take a couple of hrs stretching into days getting stufff in.

I route bar end cable all the way under the tape (like ergos) on our touring bikes. Less cluttered looking and no difference in performance.
