After a couple of rides where I have ended up lost because I had nothing to carry a map in, I've decided it may be a good idea to take one with me! While I use a rucksack when commuting, I prefer not having a bag on my back when doing longer rides, so was considering a bar bag. Really just looking for one which is big enough to carry a map(s)- hate living on the border of 2 OS maps!)), phone and possibly a snack (have a saddle bag for inner tube/tools but it is not big enough for anything else). Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

Do you want to match the SaddleBag?

If not then it will depend upon budget - I use Ortlieb by preference.

Do you really need a bar bag? I ride on longer day rides with map pages torn from the road atlas folded in a poly bag which I simply stuff in my cycle shirt pocket. The phone, keys and folding stuff go in another poly bag in the other pocket, job done.

I like the Vaude Road 1, it's a lot smaller than most of the others, 4.5 ltr instead of 7 or 8. Not waterproof, it comes with a cover, but then you can't use the mapcase... It's also available branded as EBC.

If you want something with a mapcase to hold an OS map, the Ortlieb is probably the best, alot of the others are a tight fit and you can end uop with damaged maps. Both the bag and mapcase are watertight.
If you just want to hold a map on your handlebars there's a few options, like this one.

Hi check out wiggle :

I have the DHB Marsden barbag. It's very good for the price but the map pocket is only quite small compared to other makes. It's 8ltr and you can get quite a bit of stuff in it. see this thread on another forum :

BTFB & Tynan - You're assuming that I have cycle jerseys with back pockets - which at the moment I don't.

Cheers for the suggestions of bags (and no it doesn't have to match the saddle bag), I will check them out, though from a quick look they are more expensive than I was expecting

...my shorts have pockets to...you got shorts?

I have a carradice overlander bar bag with a map holder. It is big enough to get lot's of stuff in there...choccie biscuits, sweets, tools, over shoes, very useful...on tour it never leaves my side. Get a poly bag liner for it though.
