In between here and there
Strange that, I had been home 5 hours bike sitting in the dining room 110 psi put in on Tuesday then BANG it just blew and I have a 2" slit in the wall where it joins the rim. No clue as to why or what caused it. Very strange it meant I couldn't commute today which I was gutted about. Think I will buy two and keep a spare at home.

Anyone else ever had a Tyre/Tube do this? Tyre has about 2000 miles on it and had barely shown any wear.

Had the brake blocks rubbed against the tyre at all? Sometimes hard to see if they have but that's is the usual cause of your problem.

Seriously wow, going up my steepest hill yesterday I heard rubbing from the back wheel, I put it down to being wet that some grit was on the rim or my super strength I was flexing the wheel, but it sounds like you have hit the nail on the head, thanks. Saved it happening to my new tyre.

Thinking about it my back brakes have felt spongey for a while ever since the bike repair man fitted my new 5700 105 levers I put it down to that (the under tape routing) or getting too used to disc brakes on the CX.

I did mean to check it out when I got home but clean forgot, made everyone jump last night thats for sure lucky I was not on it I guess

this usually happens when a tyre has been recently fitted (incorrectly) and the tyre bead is not seated correctly; possibly due to the tube being pinched under it.

it also happens when people get their 20 year old bike out of the shed for the first time in years and pump the tyres up to the max - 10 minutes later -BANG!

in your case, it sounds like a faulty tyre or as someone has said, the brake pads have been rubbing on the tyre, possible due to a buckle in the wheel or the brake blocks not being aligned properly when fitted, or even the rear wheel not being replaced properly (straight) in the frame.

i had it happen about 2 mins after blowing a rr tyre up whilst i was blowing the fr one up on the same bike , boy did i jump ...

and the strange thing was that it was a new tube that blew it pushed about 6 inch off the tyre of the rim as well

Tubes don't go bang as long as they are contained by a tyre. The worst thing that happens is that they can go down fast.

If a tube does bang, than these are the possibilities:
  1. The tyre had split and the tube bulged through the gap.
  2. The tyre wasn't seated properly, slipped off and then the tube popped.
  3. The tube was pinched between the rim and the tyre and bulged out when inflated and finally popped.

The only time I can remember this happening to me it was a faulty tire, the bead came away from the sidewall of the tyre. I was in a small group riding a quiet country lane and all you could hear was the rustle of gears and the gentle murmur of conversation, then my back tyre went off like a shotgun blast, prompting the comment from the back of the group "quiet please Dave we are trying to sleep back here".
Fortunately someone in the group was carrying a short length of old tyre in the bottom of their saddle bag and we were able to do a get me to the cafe and home repair job.

Ha ha - I like that! ^_^

Many years ago, I was riding with a mate in Coventry when his rear tyre suddenly exploded. I almost crashed from the fright it gave me. Fortunately we had only just set off so we weren't moving very quickly when it happened. A post-mortem on the tyre revealed that the sidewall had perished.

Small touring group The Wednesday Riders, Rugby based, the pace was gentle, instant tyre deflation, the noise started the dogs barking in the farm a hundred yards away. My tyre wasn't very old, I took it back to the LBS but they wouldn't change it.

I had already removed the wheel to replace the tube, I should have guessed the tyre had gone but didn't see the 1-1.5" rip right by the rim. The tyre had been on and in use for at least 5 weeks 500 odd miles so I would think the tube was seated. But around 1k ago I changed rims and do wonder if the brakes should have been re-aligned (I didn't do the rims so have no idea if it was done)

Anyway invested and at near on £80 it really felt like an investment in a pair of GP4000 23mm plus some new pads.

Test rode last night and the brakes feel a lot better, but that could be down to the new brake blocks, so may never know the cause but Ians seems the closest given the symptoms.
