Ok, we all know about the P*n*t*re Fairy but I met the Ball Bearing liberation Fairy today. This is the result of its' work. I though my ride was far more sluggish than usual.!!!!

Man that's impressive! Incidentally, I don't know whether it'll be an issue, but those 'cage' things are totally redundant. I searched for them for ages once before a bloke told me they only exist to make assembly easier in the factory. Functionally they're irrelevant.

So do you mean that I could fill the area where the cage fits with BB's instead? Might be cheaper than replacing the bottom bracket.

After a mash like that, check the races on the cup and shaft. If a ball has shattered, its hardened, and might have 'Brinelled' the polished surface while you were riding.

The easy way to remember how many balls, is - "there's a (soccer) team at each end".

Cheers. The cups looks to be ok, but I have greased them heavily just in-case. I have replaced the one piece crank with another for the time being as I could see signs of uneven wear on the gear side.

You would pick a sport I know nothing about  I guess you are not talking about 5 aside and so there should be 11 bearings in each cup. Each cage holds nine. Next time one falls apart I will try loose bearings instead as I can not justift the cost of a new bottomn bracket and crank arms.

Get a cartridge BB - is that from an old cup and cone type bb - not the new Octalinc or Hollowtech....

Jeesh - what have you been doing for that to self destruct !!

There's old bike shop trick when a customer asked how many to fit in a bearing. Theu ask tou how many you can get in and the correct number is always one less than that!

Would you believe just road and trail riding. Probably no more than 200 miles a week. The bike is a very old Apollo Kaos (Halfrauds Special) and is designed like a BMX but on a larger scale.

To answer your earlier query - yes. Just stick in grease and bearings and you'll be fine. I had a wheel that I rode for a while with mashed up bearing in it - some slight acne to the cone when I finally took it apart but I repacked it with bearings and grease and rode thousands more miles on it. Cones are *incredibly* hard - and hard to significantly damage.
