So a few days after I got my bike the cable on the front mech was getting hit by the crank arm & it snapped off.
I had a new cable put on & told a mechanic about how it snapped off & was much too long to start with.

I then rode roughly 72 miles a few days after & it snapped off AGAIN. The trouble is it sticks out to the right & keeps getting caught in the pedal arc.

Next time I'll have it really short so it doesn't catch.

I'm loving been a rodie but I'm getting cheesed off that every maintenance problem I have is always front mech related which is taking the shine of cycling. I can't keep going through cable the way I am.

I never once had this happen in years of MTB'ing.

I was wondering if others have suffered with the same problem or kept the stick out deliberately short to avoid such fouling?

One of my road bikes was doing that, one of those mystery noises that was driving me crazy until I got back home. I cut it down and then realized I didn't have any cable ends. I put a small wire nut on it instead. It is still there as far as I know.

Forgot to add, I just bent the loose end of the cable away from the pedals.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
You mean the free end of the cable after it is clamped to the mech? How long was it? I leave mine long enough to allow me to cut off the crimp, and replace with another, if required (very rarely) - around 3 cm. You can also bend the cable back out of the way.

It was about an inch long & also wanted to naturally bend to the right. Will I have enough cable to pull through so I don't need an entire new cable?
