I have just started cycling and have a mountain bike. My back wheel on my mountain bike keeps slipping, my journey is a mixture of road and paths. Today I came off my bike as I went off the road onto the pavement. The back wheel just slid down the pavement at the low part where it joins the road. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening. I recently had a full service on the bike and they set all the pressures.
thanks.

Photo of the wheel/tyre would help... my three blind guesses would be:

- Treads/rubber on rear tyre worn down to near-non-existent
- Wheel not sat right in the frame
- You took the route onto the kerb at too shallow an angle and the tyre slipped on the wet/muddy paving

It is normal I would say for a bit of slippage on really muddy terrain, keep pedalling through it and learn to "feel" the slipping and work with it. Bad luck on your off, it could just be that bit of pavement was greasy.

thanks for this it sounds to me that my inexperience was that I did take it at a high angle and should have gone at more of a right angle. I will take the advice given and put my cuts and scrapes down to experience.

I've come a cropper doing this - learned my lesson; right angles only ever since.
I was about 9 when I did it, but everyone's done it once at whatever age.

Erm don't ride on the pavement ?

Seriously, what this lot say. I've done it, although mine was an entrance to a supermarket loading bay - front wheel went over the curb fine, the back didn't - I didn't come off, but the skid must have looked spectacular. I was too busy trying to stay upright and not poop my pants.

Same here, except my acute*** brush with pavement joins was only 18 months ago, and my hands still have scars from it, because the fall was messy .
