I have a Smart luner 2... and the thing is bright... but in the wet it'll either stay on and won't turn off or more of an issue not stay on! Any suggestions to a good bright water proof back light?

Just put a thin smear of silicone grease or this one on the joint after you've opened it up. All my Smart lights get that treatment and I don't have any problems at all in the wet.

I do that on everything electrical that's used outdoors and it always keeps water where it belongs - outside the equipment.

I've had no problems with this Cateye one commuting all weathers for the last year or so.

I chose that one because it's a reflector too so I don't need both rear light and reflector, and because it screws to the rear plate of my rack easily. I do use mudguards so it only gets wet from above usually.

p.s. sorry I just noticed what you said - this one isn't the brightest of lights, but it's not too dim neither. My Smart one is brighter I think.

My Smart Superflash would sometimes but not too often fail in the wet; it wasn't a biggy though as it would fail to on (flashing). I've since changed to a Blackburn Mars 4.0 and touch wood never had a problem with it. To me anyway the Mars seems just as bright, if not brighter.

+1 for the Revolution. Mine didn't have the benefit of being above a mudguard and it's never failed.

Blackburn Mars 3.0 and 4.0 are really weatherproof. I have 5 x Smart 1/2 watts in the house hold and they are weather prone - TBH dry out on radiator and they are fine.

RSP Astrum 2x 1/2w rear has been great - although mount rubbish.

RSP/Raleigh Dual 1/2 watt - first was rubbish and died, other has been OK - great for rack mounting though. Big and cheap !

Best rear - Magicshine 3w rear light....awesome bit of kit - weather proof, battery a bit suspect, but bright as hell. Easy to build your own AA battery kit though, as I did.

Exposure Flare - very compact, very bright - i.e. magicshine range... Time Trialer's choice in daylight ! Cons specific battery and chargers add to cost.

My Blackburn Mars 4.0 has been exceptional in all weathers this past year. Highly recommended

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I wrap my smarts around the join with some sellotape , works fine and the batteries last long enough so oyu do not need to do it to often.
Also stops a bit of vibration that can sometimes switch them off !

Another thing i found was that my superflash does not like sub zero temperatures...

Barnet,
+2 to all the posts saying that a smear of grease or vaseline around the join. My Smart lights have never suffered in the wet.
