Hi all, just a quick question, last 12 months have been an upheaval to say the least, new job, woman trouble etc. just settling now, so my mind is looking at getting back into the saddle, and enjoying. Trouble is, my fitness has taken quite a dive and it's very disheartening. Kicking myself is an understatement. Has anyone else encountered such problems?

I stopped riding last October and started back about six weeks ago. I also gained about 20 lbs during the winter. About a month ago I found out I had high blood pressure and am now taking medication for it. This is making me even more determined to ride, get back into shape and stick with better eating habits.

I try to ride at least 10 miles a day and am working on commuting about 24 miles round trip to and from work. Doing the round trip commute is still difficult for me because some days I am on my feet about all day at work. I am fortunate because I have access to a pick-up truck at work that I can drive home if there are thunderstorms or I feel too tired to ride my bike home. I also have my personal pick-up truck at home and two bicycles so I normally have my choice of auto or bicycle to travel in either direction.

I have a comfort style bike that I enjoy riding a lot and a drop bar road bike that I am still fighting to get comfortable on. The drop bar bike is faster but being out of shape I am still getting used to it and it does hurt more. I think having my Townie allows me to keep riding more often than I would if I just had only my Trek 2.3 because I might be aching much more. Some days are easier than others too, today was a rough one with the heat and humidity  so i just drove the truck home this evening.

Just try to not overdo it and allow yourself options until you get back into a condition you feel good at. At least that is what I am trying to do. I have dropped 15 of the 20 lbs that I gained over the winter and plan on losing much more than those 20.
