Back brake locking on left hand side

I wonder if anyone can help me. I bought my road bike in August and have had a small problem with it. The back brake has occasionally locked on the left hand side so that the wheel is rubbing against it when going along. I have adjusted it so that it doesn't do it and just carried on.

Yesterday it went in for it's first service and when I picked it up from Evan's I cycled to work. By the time I got there I thought that something must be very wrong with the gearing because it felt impossible to get up a slight hill. When I got off it I realised why. The back wheel would not spin freely at all. I adjusted the brake and thought no more of it. Later I did what was meant to be a quick 10 mile cycle into London but I had to get off and adjust the brake 5 times. I stopped at an LBS but he couldn't see a problem after it was adjusted even when he tried braking it hard. Of course as soon as I was about a mile down the road the problem had reoccurred.

On the way home from central London later in the evening I stopped at Evan's and told them about the problem that had undoubtedly been caused by something they did in the service.

They denied that it was anything to do with the service but said that it might be that there is some dirt up in the brake that I need to clean out. He tightened the bolt that allows the brake to move about so that it's now difficult to adjust the brake if it does go out of place and I road down the road to test it. All seemed fine so we left it at that.

I got home a mile and a half later and it was rubbing very slightly again. I rode to work this morning and it's awful again. Admittedly I haven't had a chance to clean it yet but I wondered if anyone had any alternative explanations for what might be going wrong? Seems too much of a coincidence that it happened after the service for it not to be related.

What sort of brakes do you have. Are they V, caliper ...?

If V's or cantilever you may want to adjust the spring tension on both sides to balance them out. This can be done by turning little grub screws that are in the brake levers near the pivot.

If caliper, sometimes the mechanism can jam at one of the pivot points and it all needs to be freed up to work in a balanced way. You may benefit from taking them off the bike, disassembling, cleaning, greasing and reassembling.

They are calipers. Evans said that they were adjusted correctly when they looked at it. I guess taking apart and cleaning up is going to be the way to go. I'm just so clueless at doing that sort of thing that I don't want to mess anything up any worse!
