Ah yes, the "throwaway B side" that was often as good as the "A". Happy days of the 7" single.

Infact what has happened to singles?

In fact, what has happened!

Is it just me, or is everything shoot?

I was one of those people who often got to like the B side better than the A. A good example of this, which vindicates me now, is the B side of Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' - the coolest of cool grooves with an amazing vocal delivery, 'Save Me'.

Also, Sly and the Family Stone's 'Everyday People' had the seminal funk classic 'Sing a Simple Song' on the B.

Thats untrue! Only my shoot is really shoot, everything else comes some where inbetween brilliant and rubbish!

Like Van (the man) Morrison that I am listening to now he comes some where near great, couldn't tell you what his latest A or B side is thoughj!

It must have made a dent in the artist's earnings. It was very often a good con to make money. An artist would put out a classic song knowing it would be a hit but (s)he/they would make their money by penning some self-indulgent crap and sticking it on the b-side as the song writer got the same royalties for the sale of the single, not the hit. Once that was realised, all sorts of dross was produced. As well as some good stuff, obviously!

iirc soft cell made an arse of it with "tainted love", backed as it was by a version of the supremes' "where did our love go", meaning they got bugger all royalties as writers on their biggest hit single.
