hi all,

after reading several 'which lights' threads i have settled on the ayup v-twin lights:

http://www.ayup-lights.com/products/31/

my question is, what is the best beam to buy?

the options are:
- Intermediate - handlebar use
- Medium - headband use
- Narrow - helmet use

i ride a road bike and use it to commute. On my route i travel on unlit minor/country roads and therefore need lights to see as well as be seen.

i'm leaning towards the handlebar use ones but now i wonder if i should get a cheap handlebar light and buy the helmet ones. i can't afford the set with both so these will be my main lights.

should i get the handlebar ones???

cheers,

cam

I have the handle bar ones and I use them in town and in the country and in woods and on unlit cycle paths at night and they are great.

had to hit the back button on my order!

it appears that not only is there a £25 delivery charge but there's also the same again to be paid for tax/duty.

that pushes the £150 lights to over £200 and i can't afford that.

Can anyone confirm if i've read the site correctly and if so, what £150 lights could i get instead (that will only cost me £150).

Cheers,

Cam

When I got my DiNotte, which have a similar light output, I intended to mount them on the bars, but riding home from work the first time (they were delivered to work) I used the head band (it was too dark and cold to stand around fitting handlebar mount). I still haven't got around to fitting them to the bars, have the light on you head is really useful...

well as per advised on their site, i emailed ayup on thursday to ask them to confirm the final price for uk buyers.

that was on thursday and i still haven't had a response. as all the group reviews still favour the ayups, i still haven't ordered anything and was considering reviewing the finances next week when i get paid.

however, is this lack of response a sign of poor ayup customer service or does it just hammer home the fact that i'm not buying something from a shop that i can go and visit if i have problems?

Never had a problem with AY UP responding, why not fire off another email maybe it got stuck in a spam filter these things happen.

Don't forget Aus is 10 hours out to us so the delay might be a little longer..?
I emailed recently and I think it took a day. That said, I don't think they'll know the final value as TNT will phone you when it arrives in the UK to tell you what duties and etc are payable. There is a postage calculator on the AyUp site as well so you can work out that side of things.
BUT....
get together two people wanting a kit and postage is free (if it weighs over 3.5 kg).
Now I'm considering these lights and I know on another thread there were several people wanting more mounts... so it might well be worth clubbing together with someone. I haven't decided for sure if I want the AyUps or not (still trying to compare beam shots and think where things will fit on my bike etc etc) but if I do it'll be for two bikes so we'll make the weight limit for sure. PM me if you want - may start another thread if I decide to get them and see who else wants in.

There are a couple of accessories I want so I would be interested.

Just had another look on the AyUp site and I've just found this:

NEW - From 18th September 2009 we will be collecting all taxes and fees for UK orders. This means the price you see displayed includes VAT.

Previously, goods purchased from the UK through our Australian shop did not have the VAT component added in the purchase price. VAT, Duty & an Admin Fee was charged to the customer by TNT UK or customs when the goods landed in the UK. Now we ship all orders using Free Domicile which means we collect the VAT etc from you and pay to the UK tax department. This allows us to charge in Pounds Sterling and ensures a smooth, uninterrupted journey from our door to yours.
Absolutely no extra costs guaranteed !

The invoice we email to you on ordering and ship along with the goods will have all costs clearly itemised and this document can be used if eligible to claim back any VAT or Duty.
Admin Fee

This is a one off charge by TNT UK to cover customs processing, clearance etc

Duty

Is a charge of 2.7% of the total order, including shipping if any, before VAT is applied

VAT

Currently at 15% and is applied after duty has been added

So that means, as far as I can make out, all included bar postage, and I think they're still doing the free postage if more than 2 kits / 3.5 kg offer....
