Axles and Cones Spares

I removed the rear axle from my fairly new bike (out of warranty).

The drive side cone is pitted, the non-drive side is fine. The hub races are fine.

I suspect that the fault was present from installation.

I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice about how to proceed.

I've tried getting a replacement cone, no luck.

Now I've been told a full replacement axle assembly with cones and spacers may not be possible.

The races take standard 1/4 balls and the freehub is Shimano 105 10 speed.

Replacement cones are made by Wheels Manufacturing. Have a google and compare the one you've taken off. If it's even halfway modern the LBS should be able to provide straight out of the spares box.

Planet-X - Too busy chatting to serve me

Fosters - No cones in stock only cheapo Weldtite axle assemblies

JE James - No cones, not even any axles in stock

Universal Cycles - Nothing that fitted existing axle

Maybe I need to move back to London as it's crap for bike shops up North

Try SJS Cycles. They keep all kinds of bearings etc.

Looks like that Wheels company has them, but I need a vernier caliper to measure my existing one.

If St John St doesn't clock in try Spa Cycles in Harrogate. They carry a lot of stuff the fashion victim shops won't provide.

Would you believe it, Halfords had one and gave it me for nowt.

Not an exact match but so close as not to make any difference, no extra washers or spacers required and the rubber gaiter fits on it a treat .

Works fine now all put back together, runs smoother than the pitted one for sure.

Great. Pack it with quality waterproof grease - like Finish Line....you'll be fine.
