The step son's Apollo Phaze MTB had a broken rear axle so I sourced this from halfords

http://www.halfords.com/cycling/cyc...5mm-x175mm-axle-with-bearings-grease-standard

The problem is the cones do not seal the cups so the bearings are open to the air, its a freewheel (screw on) set up. These are the what were on the old axle, unfortunately I cant reuse them both as the one on the side nearest the break is damaged. Any idea where I can get replacements as I have exhausted my google skills with no joy.

Dont fancy the new hubs chances of a long life if the bearings are open to the elements

Are you sure they gave you the right axle

Can you push the seals off the old cones and then fit them to the new. The new and old cones need to be the same diameter, obviously. IME the seals are a very tight "interference" fit.

Otherwise, St John Street Cycles carry a huge range of cones.

This used to puzzle me too until the penny dropped. As Tim Hall mentioned above, if the cones are the same diameter, the thin metal dust-covers can be pushed off the old cones and re-used. I've done it successfully several times.
