Prob been asked before but what should I be looking to improve my average speed or distance ?

I've been cycling more recently and try to get in at least three rides a week unfortunately work gets in the way, rides normally in the 25 to 30 mile region (ok only 1 in the 30 mile region but I was chuffed) anyway should I be trying to go further or just try and improve my avg speed which is in the 14 to 15 mph ?
By the way I should point out I'm a bit of a lumpy 41 year old !!!!!!!

depends on what you want to do really ,

think stamina is more important to non pro cyclist tbh if you can do 50+ averaging 15mph your not too shabby ,

once thats achieved increased distance is next ,

and when your alarm doesnt go off and you need to sprint to work you will hit 20mph no problem for a shorter distance and feel like its nowt .

Kwl, it has indeed been asked a few times but IMO building up distance and good base miles is more important and speed naturally comes in its own good time.

+1

Increase your distances and you'll be surprised to see your speeds climb too. However, if you do the opposite and focus purely on increasing your speed, it doesn't overly help your distance!

I asked the same previously and there's some useful tips in that thread - see link. In short it's mainly distance for me as I'd like to do some longer rides/organised events and be able to complete them. However, with limited time, I often have to settle for a quick hour out on the bike and will then focus on speed or hills to get a decent workout.
