Just quoting Watts is meaningless anyway. You need to include the duration of the effort and (usually) your weight.

FWIW Hushovd could probably average 240W for many, many hours. His 1 hour power is probably >400W.

Probably not quite. The hour record is about 430ish.

I don't think any of those websites give a very accurate reading. I may be doing something massively wrong but I put the stats from the race I did last weekend, working on the basis it was pan flat, which it definitely wasn't (more a 'sporting' course with 1 mile climb to finish). It was a Reg A, 100k run off at 42kph and those sites were giving a power output of 370 watts. I know bunch riding means you save watts but there was no way I put out that amount of watts even when I'm trying to get off the front.

I've done winter training rides where we've been turning it out at 40k for long sections and the guys with power taps have said they're usually around the 310 mark when they're on the front, dipping to 260 ish when they're sheltered. Of course none of that matters if you can't keep up, which is why I don't use power meters.

I plumed the details in for random commute & get 438w, that commute had an average power of 219w according to my Quarq cranks, so that's literally doubling my average power :laugh:. When I fill in the details I get from that site into the watts to speed I get a similar speed to my average over my entire trip. However with a very rough trip segmentation on a 6 segment calculator I get 297w.
 
Accepting the limitations of the absolute values and that there are a lot of assumptions in the way it calculates, is it reasonable to use them to compare bikes?

For example if I punch in the figures for a ride on my mtb to get a power out put, and then use that power output on the other chart but with drops, clinchers and a lighter bike, does the 3mph increase in speed seem sensible/realistic?
 
They are more accurate, as Grasb notes, if you split the ride down into sections or use it over a known section. In general, especially for a circular route, keep the climb and wind to 0.
