Average MPH increase

Hi, had a great ride on my second hand bike (Dawes Galaxy 1992) which I purchased off ebay.

The first 12 miles I averaged 16.9mph . My total ride was 26 miles with a total average of 15.9 mph that's an improvement of 3.9 mph on other bike

Lots of advice was given here on which bike I should go for within my budget and the renyolds 531 frame was recommended I think it's brillant.

I'm 47 and 4 months ago I was unfit and overweight now I'm feeling great.... for those starting out I recommened cycling 100%

Nice one.

What bike did you have before?

I have an Appollo Hybrid that I bought secondhand,I am lucky to average 12mph ,usually closer to 11.I have been cycling about 4 months lost nearly two stone(still another 2 to go) feel much better in myself and more than payed for the bike with petrol saved.

Im waiting for my employers to sort out the cycle to work scheme then will be looking for a better bike.Or may do as you have and look for a good quality secondhand bike.

My first bike was a Dawes hybrid / mountain bike (thats what it says on the frame) when i started out on that bike my average was around 10.5 mph manged to get it too around 12.5mph somtimes faster depending on condtions.

The new bike is excellent makes it feel so much easier but in turn that makes you work harder.

Don't worry about your average speed over a distance.

Is your 'cruising' speed faster? Do you accelerate quicker? Do you climb easier?

Audax have 'average speed' limits, but hey, the lower limit is 14.3 kmh.
A bit of forward planning sees this achievable.

It's spurious to compare average speeds with other riders given so many variables such as terrain, wind direction, bike, road surface, knee joints etc. I did my local 'mountain' yesterday in 8m 47s whereas my usual time is 7m - 7m30s. I had a bad day so don't get too down if your average speed for a particular loop doesn't increase all the time.

No two rides are the same. Everything is different. Well maybe your shoe size stays the same but that's about it.

Performance comparisons are best done in the lab' under controlled conditions.
