How long do you think replacement rim brake wheels will be available in the marketplace in future?

It seems increasingly difficult to get hold of replacement wheels for rim brake bikes. I tried a number of shops at the weekend (Halfords, Evans and Decathlon).

Evans seems to have a new kind of axle I have never seen before where QR skewers are replaced by screw-on nuts which you need a hex key to undo. I guess this is some kind of theft prevention measure.

I eventually managed to source a replacement front wheel for my Trek 720 trekking in Decathlon (price: £40) but I got the impression there were not many is stock due to lack of demand.

(there was a problem with a replacement rim - there was a slight dink which I could not flatten which caused juddery braking)

Sorry, title should read "Availability of rim brake wheels with quick release". Any chance a moderator could change it?

There are wheels around, but not budget ones. I build my own for my 26" MTB - still rims and hubs available.

The new fangled 'through axels' are better for disk braked bikes due to the braking forces at the axel from the discs.

Try going to a bike shop not a 'retailer'

Spacycles still sell bikes and hence wheels for QR (both for rim and disc brake bikes). They'll build good wheels as well as having factory builds

Thanks for the responses so far. It seems I do not have to worry, good news.

Nothing to worry about. Similar issues with through axel bikes especially MTB and gravel bikes as they keep changing the specification for rear hub widths.

The option expires after some time... not sure how long though, maybe a month or two?

I got mavic crossrides for my 30 yr old Cannondale, are they still available?
I want to get the Sun Metal originals rebuilt so need to find a great wheel builder near Chester.
