Hi,

Thinkin health im returning to riding to help get fit.

i used to play rugby to a good standard and no stranger to training in that time. finished at 21 as struggling to get to where i needed ot be. struggled with fitness for as long as i can recall. at 35 was diagnosed with graves disease, an autoimmune disease that attacks the thryoid and eyes. ive had radio iodine to kill the thyroid cells and everything is returning to normall. i got alot of trouble with my heart in that time, irregular heart beat etc but now 18 monthss after treatment im on leveothyroxine and feel good.

i thought id struggle more with the cycling, i used to do alot of walking as with heart trouble (undiagnosed at time) i couldnt step up pace without making myself ill. now cycling i realise how muh all that affected my fitness. i am delighted with my progress at 37 and all the issues in the past i feel fitter than ever before!!

im gonna try to build it up, the only issue at mo are tired/sore thighs, thats good eh? shows im pushing myself and its not making me ill

anyone else cycle with health issues, how you find the training?

Hi davidk I to have had a similar illness! Called sarcoidosis,it can hit any organ. I only have it in my lungs spent 7 years having tests before my lung functions where back to normal. Started by coughing severly and blacking out, broke a rib and didn't find out for months. My doctor didn't send to a specialist for about 4 months, he then said could be lung cancer! wasn't pleased but has turned out ok. It's still in there but at the moment is dorment and not causing any problems. Have not heard of your condition but listen to your body, if it's used to sport you will know how much to push. One thing I've learnt is how valuable rest is. As to sore legs you will soon get used to using different muscles.
Good luck

I am in the throws of an autoimmune disease too. Sjogren's syndrome. Attacks the moisture producing glands of the body, generally affecting the eyes and mouth but recently for me has been the gut, liver, and pancreas.

It makes cycling really difficult for me, I must be honest. Quite often I get stomach pain, nausea, lightheadedness on the bike and I haven't progressed with cycling as much as I would have hoped due to a flare in February. I started cycling last April, and was up to 3 hour rides, got sick again in Feb this year and I'm basically starting from scratch. Sucks!

I am always hopeful for getting better no matter how unlikely it is for me, so I just take it a day at a time and keep going.
