At about 5ft 11in is the XL 58 Scott Addict R4 too big?

Just bought a used 2008 Scott Addict R4 as I was told it was a Large size 56 and after measuring it found out it's actually a XL 58 size. I bought it from someone who is 6ft 4in and it has an integrated seat post that was hardly cut at all for the previous owner so is very high at the moment (please see pic). When I initially found out it's a 58 XL I thought the bike must be too big for me as I'm about 5ft 11in but is it really? It's a stunning bike and I would obviously like to keep it but if it is too big I would be better off selling it before cutting the seat post obviously. Could it be the right size? I thank you in advance for your replies.

Nice bike Miurasv. We're all diiferent but according to a bike fit the ideal bike for me is 56cm, I'm 5ft 9,1/4 in. So if 58cm feels right to you I don't think its too big.

It certainly sounds too large for 5-11 but I guess it depends whether you prefer a stretched out or more upright riding position.

Are you the miurasv from the mvagusta.net forum?

I can ride a 56 frame and I'm only 5'10''. As mentioned put a shorter stem and then go out for a ride and see how that feels.

Before I can get on this bike I will have to get the Integreated Seat Post cut as I can't get near the seat at the moment but if the bike is too big I don't want to cut it if you understand as it would make it easier to sell and suitable/adjustable for more people uncut.

don't get hung up on grame sizes - they are specified in different ways - either to top of seat tube or to mid point of top tube - can be a couple ins of difference.

the horizontal top tube is more important.

on my road bike this is 58 cm; i am 65 ft 1 so you would be looking at a 55 cm top tube.

I'd think an XL would be for someone well over 6ft.

It may not matter if you like the riding position the larger frame gives, but I'd think v. carefully before cutting that seatpost...

It's obviously far too big for you.

I tell you what, seeing as it's you, I'll take it off your hands for £20.
Can't say fairer than that

It's got a 58cm effective top tube according to the Scott site. I'm 6ft 2 and that's roughly what I ride with a 110mm stem and I've got quite a long body and short legs for my size. Sounds like it might be a bit big, but different strokes for different folks. I'd be wary of putting too short a stem on it though, that could effect the handling.

Nice bike.

If it feels right, chances be it is right. Don't go overboard on alterations though - the bike should fit you not the other way round. I'd also echo kyuss' comments on shortening the stem too much (fwiw I'm 5'9/5'10, I ride a medium Scott and medium Specialized, both with 100mm stems).

And be careful if you do decide to chop that seat post. You get a few cm's of adjustment but if you can negate that by changing saddle as different saddles have different rail heights. I know as a guy in my club bought an R4 with the seat post chopped. When he tried it, it seemed fine but when he put his own saddle on it he discovered it was about 2 cm too small.

58cm should be fine.
I am 6'2 and should be on a 61cm frame....but I ride 58....longer seatpost+stem = problem solved....but 58 should be ok for you

If it was me, I would go for a proper measuring and bike fitting session. This should determine your "ideal" position.

It should then be pretty straightforward to establish if your bike can be adjusted to that ideal position or not. If you go to a decent shop they will also carry out the adjustments for you.

It would be a good investment anyway because you can always use the measurements in the future if that bike is deemed unsuitable and you have to look for another. If you got the Scott for a good price it would be money well spent. It looks a really nice bike and would warrant the effort and money (about £50 for fitting and adjusting).

If you are in range of the North West of England, then I can recommend Paul Hewitt in Leyland - but there are others as well.

Gary.

Lots of people come out with comments like "I'm 6ft and I ride a 58cm". These measurements mean nothing. Every manufacturer measures seat tube length differently, and one companies 58 is anothers 56. And that's not even taking into consideration the amount of slope that a top tube makes to a measurement. Some bikes have more compact geometry than others making seat tube sizing completely useless in the grand scheme of things.

I have 3 bikes in regular use, a 57 a 58 and a 61, the common measurement between them all is the effective top tube is within 5mm of my 58.5cm ideal. Nothing else matters. Even if you take two different manufactuers who measure the seat tube in the same way, and they both have similar amount of slope on the top tube/frame angles etc, the effective length could differ by as much as 2-3cm. I know for a fact that there are many compact frames out there that would simply be too short for me, which is why I'm sceptical of fitting services that give you simple statements like "you should be riding a 58cm frame"

Thanks very much everyone for your replies. I have decided to sell the bike as I can't bring myself to cut 4" or 5" off the seat post. I am now looking for a 56 L Scott Addict or Cervelo R3 or RS. If anyone knows of one for sale please let me know. I've seen the ones on the auction site. Also, if anyone is looking for a stunning white 58 XL 2008 Scott Addict R4 you know where one is. I may even take their 56 bike off them in exchange. You never know. Thanks again.
