Hi there,

I'm looking for a bike, but I don't know what bike :P

As per title, I'm looking to spend up to £1500; obviously if I can get something that ticks the boxes for cheaper, then great.

I've recently bought a set of wheels from Hunts (aero Wide) rim brake type and I'm enjoying them so far, although a mate would be interested in a set for his training bike (more on that later)

I currently have a Triban 5 from 2014 and I think I like the position, though I haven't tried anything else to see the differences

Current thoughts on the next bike
  • Like the Triban 5, will last me for a good few years
  • Mainly used for my own pleasure/phys. I would like to get into competing but I doubt I'd be able to reach the required level
  • I'd like Shimano 105
  • I'd like relatively light (current bike is 9.5kg with the new wheels, 10kg stock)
    • If i could get to say.... 8kg? that'd be great
  • Alternatively, a bit of aerodynamic benefit would be good; I mainly cycle on flat areas
Other thoughts.
  • With the bike lasting me a few years, would i be better to move to a disc frame? I love internal cables, and I'd adore having an integrated cockpit but they're too expensive atm.
  • If I did move to disc frame, then obviously the new wheels from Hunts wouldn't be compatible, but I could sell them to a mate.
  • I'm not too fussed between Alloy and Carbon. If i can get an alloy bike which is of a similar weight to Carbon, but cheaper, then I'm happy with Alloy.
  • If i can get a very good frame and upgrade over time, that's an option too ;) But of course, It would need to be a very good frame to start with, otherwise I'd be putting good parts on a crap frame

With Quidco cashback, I could get a voucher of £300 for Halfords, or a Decathlon voucher of £250.

I have looked at Boardman SLR 8.9's, and they do look really good, but experiences of both them and Halfords aren't brilliant. I could take the risk though. Also I don't like the colour scheme. Carbon, rim brakes, 9.03kg.

I'd also looked at Ribble's R872, but to be honest, I don't really like the design. It looks too Cylinder tube-y. Rim brakes, carbon frame, 8.64kg.

I've been enamoured with Decathlon's Ultra CF 105 for a while; my Triban is from Decathlon and they give a 5 year warranty for the frame. Triban has given me no issues over the time I've had though I haven't looked at many reviews as of yet. Weight is apparently 7.99kg in Medium, and uses Rim brakes (my size  ) But the cables look so untidy at the front  As they do on all these bikes to be fair

Quite ridiculously, I'm unable to get Cycle to work

I'm aware I said i wasn't fussed by Alloy or carbon, then linked 3 carbon bikes  Please feel free to share many more ideas with me :notworthy:

Alternative option is to simply ride my Shimano Sora'd Triban 5 I bought for £160 4 years ago, and wait for an integrated cockpit bike to hit £1500 :laugh:

Can't really advise on what bike to get, but regards

You have to join a club, but as far as time trials go, there is no minimum level required. Apart from the elite riders, you are just competing against yourself and trying to better the ride you did last time.

You should be able to get something decent for £1500 although adding disc brakes will increase the weight, but improve stopping in certain circumstances; e.g. my son's getting a Ridley Noah Fast next year and the disc brakes add 500g to the weight, together with disc wheels turning out to be more expensive.

As for racing, what type? For any you should be part of a club as this will help group riding, but it's not essential. Cycling Time Trials run time trials (sub-forum on here) and British Cycling / TLi do others such as road racing / criteriums / track (you're showing as being in Manchester, with the velodrome).

Why? It doesn’t sound like you plan to commute on it?

SRAM is very good, rival equivalent to 105, but a bit lighter :okay:
Bikes might still be in short supply come spring

yeah had a look at these and linked in OP. Just not a fan of the design.
At the minute I am realllly interested in the Decathlon bike. RR 920 CF For £2k I could move up to the Ultegra version, with the crazy good carbon wheels, so I may go through with the purchase  Ultegra isn’t what I’m interested in but the wheels would ensure that I simply wouldn’t need to do any upgrades for a long time

I would prefer a threaded bottom bracket rather than a pressfit but apart from that it looks nice :okay:

You're clearly looking at 'new' bikes. There's also a lot of hardly used second-hand ones at that price point with a lot more for your money.

I’m on a couple cycle sale pages on Facebook and i’m Keeping an eye out on there. My concern buying second hand is carbon fibre and not wanting to buy a ruined bike. Current bike was second hand so i’m Open to it if the right bike comes up

I have a carbon cannondale synapse that I will be looking to sell around spring time.
It’s a good comfy bike iv just had my eyes swayed by something else. I wouldn’t rule out the endurance bikes thinking their slow I’m not a great cyclists but have a lot of decent times on Strava, a friend has an sworks and I’m considerably quicker and follow a few keen cyclists and they aren’t to far ahead so the bike is more than fast enough
