Nope, I'm not talking star trek... my commuting tyres (the wonderful Michelin Krylion carbons) have come to the end of their life. It actually happened quite prematurely when I hit the world's biggest pothole on a club ride the other week that put a large hole in the front. I've been limping around with a Park Tools boot patch getting me to work and back, but to be honest I feel like I should stop being a skinflint and invest in a new set before something goes horribly wrong.

Now these magnificent rubber rings have been discontinued so I'm looking for a suitable replacement. i.e. lightweight, decent puncture protection, grip in all conditions and durability.

What are my options? I have conti GP4000s on the best bike. They're great but not for everyday so they're out.

I didn't get on with the Conti GP 4 Seasons so they're also out.

I quite like the look of the Schwalbe Durano (not S or plus). Any good?

Also, I've been running 23mm widths. Should I move to 25mm for the commuter for a bit of added comfort or will it not make the blindest bit of difference?

Ps I know tyres are a common thread, but if noone ever posted a new thread we'd just be sat here saying nothing.
PPs I know that everyone likes to stick in their own particular tyre camp so I need actual reasons for your recommendations, not just "because I have them".

Cheers

Michelin pro4? The Krylion was replaced by I think the Lithion or similar

Durano is a Marmite tyre. One of my staff uses them on her tourer/commuter and likes them C+ gave them top status in their winter tyre test. I've seen and heard others saying they'd never give them house room. I'm using Vittoria Open Pave on one of the bikes and am very impressed good grip, flexible.

The Pro4 Endurance which was supposed to replace the Krylion in the Michelin range is not as long lasting. IME 2000km and it turns into a p****** magnet.
Trying a Durano (not S or plus) on the back at the moment. So far so good.

I think the Michelin Pro Race 4 'Endurance' is the replacement for the Krylion. I've just been through my 2nd set, not actually sure they last as long, I got 10 months out of mine, which seemed less than I was expecting. Can be found online for about 20quid each though so solid value.

Make sure you get the 'Endurance' rather than the Michelin Pro Race 4 'Service Course', which don't last as long and are basically like the old pro race 3's

If you like the Krylion then I would also recommend the Pro4 Endurance. May not be quite as long lasting, but is slightly grippier IMHO and has the same level of comfort.

I prefer 25mm krylions to 23s but it doesn't make that much difference really, and do remember the Krylion/Pro4 25s are quite big for their size if clearance is an issue. I found the 25mm krylions were slightly larger than 28mm sport contacts (which are narrow for their size).

I used Duranos on my distance bike for a couple of years. Two punctures (both by something that wouldn't be stopped by anything) in all that time. The only reason they came off the distance bike is that I don't do as much distance anymore so I didn't want to pay as much for tyres. The Duranos went on the new commuter though and so far no issues.
