Installed Freddie's new gear cable, and fund when I twisted the grip the cable end (the shifter end) was pulling through the recess it sits in, so nothing would shift.

Had a major strop because I thought I'd broken the cheap grip shift

Then I compared the old and new cables, and it seems the end of the new cable is a nadgers smaller than the old one

Back to the LBS tomorrow...

Why, it isn't broken and shifts gears fine?

I was toying with spoiling him with a trigger shifter but TBH I'd got it set up lovely and it was shifting fine so there is no urgency. I only replaced the cable because he'd knocked the end cap off and the cable was frayed, and kept stabbing him in the leg as he pedalled...
