Are these tyres too wide ?

Hello,

I'm hoping to fit some Schwalbe Marathon tyres to my bike.

The tyres are 700 x 32c and will be fine for clearance on the frame, but will they be too wide for the new wheels I have which are ETRTO 622 x 13c ?

I can always go narrower on the tyre, if I can put up with the look ... skinny wheels will look daft on a Claud Butler Urban 300 hybrid. :o)

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Don.

perceived, or old, wisdom says that ratio would be too big...however as a newbie I ran M+ 700x35 tyres on 622-13 rims with no problems at all...the bike actually came with 700x32 tyres.

sorry, just to add, this was a Giant around the £900 price mark

Thank you for the replies.

Decided to have a go and have put the tyres on with no problem, and there doesn't seem to be any deformation or undue stress anywhere.

Time will tell, but they seem to corner as they should and have a nice cushioned feel to them at 90 psi.

Thanks again,

Don.

I find a rough guide line is to avoid running tyres the same width or narrower then the rim is, Cannondale made that mistake with the early Badboy urban MTB's, a 25mm tyre on 25mm rim lead to pinch punctures and dented rims.

Now don't confuse us, I assume you're referring to external width now? the other stuff on this thread uses the internal width and you can often see what's ok expressed as a ratio. This CTC article by Chris Juden gives a fair bit of info:-

http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3802

He gives a broad ratio range of 1.4 to 2.2 and favours something around the 1.8 to 1 marker. For a 19mm rim that would be a range of 700x27 to 700x42 with 700x34 being the sweetspot and for a 13mm rim it's 700x18 to 700x29 with 700x23 being the middle.

This of course bears no relation to some of the MTB ratios, including 29ers, where a 2.2 to 1 ratio would seem to be the starting point.
