are the rear skewers standard in different standard sizes or do i need ones for my hub?
Cheers Ed

If you are talking about normal quick release rear skewers they are standard in diameter but can be of different length, because hollow qr axle can be of different length. If you are talking about axles they can be of different diameter and thread standards dependent on the hub, see this e.g.

The skewer is the quick release thin metal long screw.
An axle is the metal long screw that comes out of your wheel hubs, you tighten it up (so the wheel does not come off the frame) with a nut. You need a 15mm spanner to remove your wheel if you have axles on the bike.
... I am pretty sure ...

lovely thanks so much i have spent prob easily 2 or hours down there f***ing about with the 18 1/4" ball bearings and have now confirmed i have an axle not a skewer so thread title is now irrelevant still confused with my free wheel but i can remove and put in the bearings on both sides with cassette in place!

now are axles standard in standard sizes? or how is it???
Cheers Ed

OT, The instructions with my new Race Blade longs say to remove the Springs from the skewers to accomodate the RBlades clips; any idea what this will cause?

It could be nasty if you got it wrong and one snapped or came loose!

Making the cam in the skewer might be an interesting exercise ...
