I have a Carrera crossfire1 (2012) and i would like to upgrade from the standard Tektro linear spring brakes to disc brakes. I also would like to change the forks eventually. (Not sure if the wheels will allow disc brakes) I like riding but am a complete noob. I hope to pick up a few tips from you lot.
Apart from the different frame sizes are all the frames in the Crossfire Hybrid series the same design? The other models have better parts fitted as standard.
Will most aftermarket goodies fit my frame? I will get an independent cycle specialist to fit any bits i buy.

Cheers i hope my questions are not too stupid.

I think not - Ive never owned one but when I was shopping around for my last bike I noticed the outgoing 2011 was a lot different to the 2012.

If your going through the LBS then you should be ok as they hopefully won't sell you stuff that doesnt fit!

Thanks, Its such a bloody minefield. I just cant afford any more expensive mistakes. Mistake 1 seemed to be getting a bike from a Halfords that didnt care or know too much. It was like the blind leading the blind when i brought it. I know they are not all the same! A few of my friends recommended Halfords, and they had very good experiences. I should have shopped around in the first place and i know there are other great bike shops out there. LBS? local bike shop?

I have a crossfire 2 that has a totally different frame to my crossfire which is different again to my wife's crossfire.

I think it may be impractical to fit disc brakes to the Crossfire 1 but not impossible, just costly. I suspect you will need new wheels as a minimum to take the discs. I changed the forks on my crossfire 2 very easily, but then the original forks are different on the crossfire 1.

I dont think you've dont too bad MrBB, the CF as a bike is just a more comfy version of the Subway which is generally considered a fairly reliable workhorse bike, I only chose a different bike last time around as I decided against the shocks in the end.

Don't bother.
From what i can see there are no tabs on the frame and forks to fix disc brakes. Even if they had them, the cost involved, plus having to buy new compatible wheels would be far too much on a bike of this quality.

Used bikes are selling for good prices - would sound like you'd be better off selling the Crossfire and buying the bike that does everything you want

Maybe an MTB should be the next buy if doing mad offroad things needing discs

I think i have started to get my head around this cycling minefield. I have got a few miles under my belt now and will stick with the standard Crossfire 1 for a while. If i am still banging in the miles next year i will treat myself to a bike with a few more bells and whistles on it. I have a hankering for some drop handle bar's. I have not owned a racer since my Raleigh Banana and i think i also had a Kalhoff, back in the 80's.

I will however refuse to get on one until i lose the pot belly! Blokes with bigger belly's dont look good in lycra bent over dropped bars!
