I have the 10 speed ultegra 6700 and was wondering if I could squeeze a couple of extra teeth out of the rear cassette. I know shimano released a later specific version which was designed to accommodate larger rear cassettes but mine is the standard version. I have read that some people know someone's uncle who has done when they've adjusted the derailleur using longer screws etc, but does anyone specifically have a 30t on ultegra 6700 running a compact chainsaw? Don't want to buy one if its not going to work.

Think 28 is the limit for standard cage 6700

Yeah according to the shimano tech docs it is 28 but I've read on forums etc that people have pushed this to 30, its just its never a concrete response.

Go on, tilt your head!
I'm planning to chuck a 30t on my 6700 Ultegra setup...doesnt help you I know but I feel your pain regarding solid evidence of it working!

If it works on a triple it will work on a double (standard or compact).
It's all about the total tooth difference (between largest & smallest chain ring added to the difference between largest & smallest sprocket on the cassette)

Might have to take a punt then.

I run a RD-7700 GS with 32T with no issue. Some people even run it with 34T, when the official max cog size is 26T.

Unless you want to test the wrap limit also you should get the GS rather than SS model 6700, because the wrap range you need is (50-34)+(30-11) or 35T which is just beyond the official wrap limit of the SS. While the official max rear cog size for either model is 28T, your chance of making it work with a 30T (and beyond) is imho excellent by following this IF you encounter any issue.

It is however not possible to generalise how far one can push a mech - it working for someone on their bike does not guarantee it will work on yours, it is because the max cog size allowed is also dependent on e.g. the hanger length (in relation to the centre of the rear axle), which varies (despite mech manufacturers specifying/recommending a range for the length).

Hi, saw this old thread and wondered if your 30t was working fine? Also have ultegra wishing to add a few teeth.

I had the 6600 GS running a 30t on a compact chainset with no problems, not sure if it will work on a chainsaw though ^_^
