I doubt these people are allowed to surf the web whilst working; and probably can't afford a computer and internet connection on the wage they get paid! And are these people actually interested in cycling to the point they'd be login on to CC? I doubt it.

Halfords will give you 20% off if you beg the manager! Not that I'm suggesting shopping in Halfords because it's rubbish.

Not me. But, I'd suggest a good search on the web and print off the results. Ask them to match any like for like bike on price. When they match the price - then ask for some mudguards or lights thrown in for free to clinch the deal. Remember, last years models will get discounted (and in the bike world thats 2010 models as the 2011 are already being shipped in).

I did a price match with Evans - I googled the bike, found the cheapest deal on the web and then called them up. They did ask if it was actually possible for me to get to that shop to buy it, and I made up some story that I go near there for work sometimes, even though it was 200 miles from my house! Anyway, got the price match and free delivery from Evans.

OK, heres what im after...

I think im 99.9% set on a secteur elite... http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/secteur-elite-2010-road-bike-ec019549?query=secteur

BUT £800 is my top budget. But for that I really wanted a bike with full guards or crud race guards. I could squeeze to buying the guards BUT the brakes on the sectuer dont have enough clearence with 25 tyres. The solutions are new 23 tyres (about £50 for a decent pair) or new brakes (about £62 for simano 105). Ideally I would like the 105 brakes.

Do you think evens will do a deal on swapping the brakes for 105s? Especially if I showed then the Verenti Kilmeston currently at £750?

I can't see how swapping the brakes is going to make any difference.  Even if it did, no budget bike shop is going to spend the time and effort doing it.  Sorry, but I think you're asking too much, though of course there's no harm in asking.  At that price, if you're a common size I wouldn't wait too long.

Thanks for your input regarding the deal.

(I wouldnt have thought that the brakes make much difference, but I have it on good authority they do)

When I got my bike @ Evans I picked one I could afford and one I liked, told the manager "I can afford that one but I want this one" and without a second thought he said "OK, we can do that".... 20% off ticket price!

Thanks, Scott is a premium brand so I hope they may be able to do something similar with specialized too, as I think Im set on a sectuer elite.

Either that or throw in some deal sweeteners, such as a rack and crud road racers.
I will report back when I have had chance to pop over.

I also don't believe swapping the brake calipers to 105 will help. What are the current calipers? I have some Crud Roadracers and I don't believe they fit many bikes with larger than 23mm tyres. I doubt Evans will price match AND swap calipers.

EDIT: this bike already has £200 off. You won't get anymore I doubt. As for the Tektro calipers, I'm very doubtful that 105s will improve clearance - might even reduce it.

Spesh, like Trek are very picky about what their resellers do and don't do. I would expect more price leeway on other brands than either of those.
I also don't see how 105 calipers would improve the tyre clearance. The bridge on the stays still remains in the same place after all.
