The reason I ask is that I got a set a week ago from CRC, but returned the rear as the valve-hole is off-centre and is drilled half on the centre section and half on the side-slope. This means that the valve nut won't screw flush with the rim and leaves a length of the valve thread exposed down one side.

This isn't the case with the front. It's drilled dead-centre as expected.

I sent CRC photos and they told me to send the rear back as it looked like a fault. Today they've emailed me and said that it ISN'T a fault and I shouldn't have been told to return it. They claim that ALL RS20 rear wheels are like this, so they'll refund my return postage and are sending the wheel back to me.

So - if you own these wheels can you check this for me ? I'm rather dubious of their claim, and to me it looks like the valve-hole drilling will weaken the rim.

Mine arrived today from CRC and my rear drilling is dead centre BUT the profile is asymmetric, i.e. it is dead centre viewed from the outer rim side but because the raised profile inside the rear rim is off-centre, the hole is on the shoulder.

This shouldn't be a problem - it's not a good idea to use valve nuts as over-tightening weakens the tube around the valve. I only ever stick one on temporarily to help pump up a tyre from flat at the roadside.

 No, I think CRC are a long way from Suffolk.

Just been out fitting the new wheels. Interesting to study the build quality given that I have Aksiums on my road bike which are in the same price bracket - I have to say the Aksiums look a lot better finished all round.

The RS20s will be Marathon plused winternightwet weather wheels for my trainertourer, so I can't really review their performance with such a heavy tyre. The tourer already has a decent wheelset that I can now fit with lighter road tyres for summer dry weather.

While in theory a seasonal tyre swap should be ok (and cheaper!), in practice rain here at any time of the year washes small flints onto the roads near my house that go straight through even kevlar belted road tyres. A quick switch of wheels on the tourer to bomb proof Marathons should now be a doddle.

I was really happy with my Aksiums until the rear started loosening spokes and I found they'd fused with the nipples so I couldn't tighten them. Put the rear into the shop for a repair and they found the rim had started cracking around the spoke holes, so said it was unrepairable. It was 1yr and 3 months old. Considering their age and what I paid for them, I'm pretty gutted. I'm hoping the RS20s give me a better run for my money !
