How far can I go?

I'm a new cyclist, and have a decent commute to work (15.5-16 miles depending on if I can lock up next to my office or not). I like to set myself goals. Some little, daily goals and some slightly bigger weekly goals. Sometimes, it's things like "I'm going to cycle to X before I stop for a minute" to "I'm going to cycle the hill to day and not get off and walk" (the last mile to work is uphill and a section of it is a 6% grade). This week's goal was to spin the entire way up the hill and not stand (which I managed to accomplish today). I'm just wondering if I'm the only person to do this.

No you're not the only one. I would think most people have their own goals that they want to accomplish whether on a commute, a leisure ride, racing, TT or what ever.

Its a good way of keeping the motivation up. I try to have sections of ride where I'll aim to push harder etc. Its also great to be able to see your progress - being able to get up hills without needing a breather or a rest at the bottom has been a revelation to me.

I do this for everything in life- especially cycling, and as you ride more your goals will grow and before you know it they start containing words like "100 miles"

Funny you say that as 100 miles is my goal for this time next year

I don't do any of that, no wonder my cycling has stayed the same since I've started!
Must try harder? Nay, can't be bothered ^_^

Perfectly normal. Goals give you something to aim for and measure your progress by. Breaking bigger targets into smaller chunks can also help motivation and save or reduce disappointment when a target is ambitious for you. Be it hills, distance, time spent on the saddle etc.

Being a computer nerd and a Gamer I do tend to have a slight lazy streak.. to counter this I tend to set myself goals in everything. So many miles in a week, personal best times on Strava ( sad I know) so many student papers graded this week. This month I also have the Size 16 ticket from my new work trousers pinned on the fridge to remind me the cake I baked is for the kids. When I tried the trousers on in M&S and they fit I actually whooped lol the dressing room assistant actually knocked on the door as she thought I had hurt myself  Little reminders help with the motivation.
Next goal size 14 trousers!!!!!!
