I am building a winter trainer as cheaply as I can and have been offerred a Campy 9 speed Compact Chainset at a good price (it's the last part I need) but the rest of the bike is 10 speed.

I have searched online for ages trying to find someone who has actually used this combination, but so far all I have found are people who say it "should work okay".

As the only difference I can find between 9 speed chainsets and 10 speed is that the outer chainwheel of 10 speed has mounting tabs .4mm thinner, I would also assume that it will work, but that front shifts won't be quite as good as with a 10 speed chainwheel.

Has anybody here actually used this combination and can tell me what it is like before I part with my money? As the chainset is a black finish Mirage I can't try it out first without there being some cosmetic damage on the chainwheel teeth.

Cheers.

My 9 speed Centaur chainset is happily married to a ten speed chain.

So happy that if they could reproduce, they would.

But would the offspring then be 9.5 speed? ;)

Thanks for that, I'll hand over the cash.

Thanks. I've bought it and fitted it. I was temporarily running a Centaur 10s carbon crank and just needed to adjust the front mech after fitting the Mirage 9s. It works great.

I am using a Veloce 111mm bottom bracket.
