Any reason to keep old chain?

As the weather was crap I decided to do some maintenance today, including changing the worn chain on my hybrid. Before I chuck away the knackered old chain, is there any reason to keep it?

With a pair of locking pliers or some such you can use it as a chain whip, if you haven't got one* already.

* on the outside chance that you are interested in dismantling freewheels you need two

You might want to keep it until you have tested your new chain. If it slips (due to a worn cassette) you could put the old one back on until you are able to get a new cassette.

How about making yourself a saddle lock chain like this:

I just chuck the old worn chains, but if I have to shorten the new chain I keep the short length I've removed in case I need to repair a chain.

Goodness: it never entered my mind that saddles could be attractive to thieves

Thanks all! Fortunately the new chain works fine though I might change the cassette anyway - the sprockets do look worn. Will probably just bin the old one though if I had a lovely brooks saddle a saddle chain would be a good idea
