Keep this brief. I have a bike with Mavic Aksiums, both tyres and wheels. They seem fine. I am forever reading about one of the first things to spend money on is better wheels. Ribble are doing Shimano Ultegra 6700 wheels at £179.99. What advantages am I likely to notice if any over my wheels. I am more than happy to buy if it is going in some way aid my riding.

I don't know if anyone else is suffering the winter riding blues but its a real effort for me to get myself out there at the moment. That's irrelevant anyway, the question is re the wheels.

I was in a similar situation a little while back. The Shimano Ultegra 6700 wheels are very good and good value for money.
On the other hand so are the Mavic Aksiums. I had those on a bike that got stolen and never had a problem with them.
I decided, after a lot of umming and aaarhing, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
If your present wheels decide to give up the ghost then the Ultegras would be a good replacement.
I don't think you would notice very much increase in performance over your present wheels. However, the Ultegras are of a better build quality.
So I would say stay with what you have.

The Aksiums are nice wheels. I upgraded to them about 14 months ago and they are so much better than the wheels that were originally on the bike. If they are working for you, why change. Why not wait until they are knackered and then upgrade.

I too am having great difficulty motivating myself to get out on my bike in the cold, dark nights.

I'd wear out the Aksiums first (which may take a while as they are robust) when they're on the way out you'll notice an upgrade more; any upgrade before that will be marginal. There is the bling factor also however, if you have the money buy the new wheels for the spring and keep the Askiums for winter.

seems to me that you want to change them, but want someone to tell you, rather than just do it

so i'll bite - buy the ultegra's and change the wheels - you know you want too and it make's sense

Aksiums are a decent midrange wheelset. I would agree with the others, the upgrade is not a big enough jump to notice much of a difference.
