I was recommended Bontrager hardcase by this forum . I've only briefly used them the once so I can't really tell you what they're like but they were highly recommended.

The ride seemed a little hard and they were noticably heavier than the Mitch pro race I had previously been running; But they rolled along quick enough.

At £10 a tyre they seem like a good choice for the winter /commute bike.

Vittoria Open Pave Evo Cg - Not Budget but....

Just changed over from the bog standard Continental grand Prix tyre to the Vittoria Open Pave Evo Cg and the difference was very noticeable.

The Conti’s gave me no problems whatsoever (I mainly ride on rural ‘B’ roads with the usual collection of pot holes etc) in the 1500 sunny? miles I covered but I felt that they did not give me the confidence I required on damp roads.

Although not exactly budget, the Vit’s have gave me so far a blinding ride, roll very easily and inspire confidence going round wet corners.

Time will tell if they carry on like this, but at the moment….

RedBike,

Bonti tyres as about much use as a pair of yak drivers underpants...

Had them as standard on my bike...hated them!

I used Bontrager Hardcase Race Lites throughout the summer and up until last week - thorough pain to fit (broke 2 tyre levers, pinch flatted 5 inner tubes and wore all the skin of my right thumb - and I've been riding bikes regularly for the last 20+ years so I'm not exactly new to fitting tyres).

I've found them very puncture resistant and very grippy even in heavy downpours and with fallen leaves... My only reservation is that the sidewalls seem a bit thin, the rear went when I tried my dynamo on it (approx 10 turns of the pedals to get to canvas!) and then last week I noticed the sidewall on the front starting to split near the bead having done about 800 miles on it.

I've now replaced the front with a Schwalbe Stelvio Plus, which I haven't ridden yet as I only fitted it this afternoon, so can't report on it yet.

The rear has now got a Schwalbe Marathon Plus on, as recommended by the Bicycle Doctor in Manchester - its survived the dyanmo so far and hasn't punctured yet... Only had it a week and a half (100 miles ish) so can't judge its life expectancy, but it is a lot less easy rolling than the Race Lites.

So I'd be interested to hear whether anyone has any recommendations for fast-rolling tyres that will survive the wire brush roller on the B&M Dymotec dynamos - failing that I'll probably switch to a hub dynamo next winter!

I don't see the point in winter tyres. I ride my 25mm tyred audax type bike on the city's roads all year round. The roads are the same all year round. If it snows I take out my 32mm Schwalbe Marathon tyred tourer, but snow only settles on the main roads about once every couple of years in Manchester.

My only adjustments for winter are clothing and lights.

I must admit I ride the same 23mm tyres all year (Schwalbe Blizzard). Other than not wearing out expensive race tyres for long winter runs then I doubt there is much point in getting winter specific tyres.

Not exactly cheap but the grip is fantastic all year around and they roll fast! No need for specific winter tyres imo.

I got a set of 700 x 23 Schwalbe Stelvio Raceguards from an eBay shop earlier this year for just over £20 iirc.

They've been superb in both the wet and the dry (and we've had plenty of wet weather this year to test them out with !!)
