i.e. it can't be seatpost-mounted, as saddlebag is in way (I want to keep it there).
I'm 'between lights' (lost my fave/best, looking at new ones) so have been bodging together a Smart light and a Blackburn bracket (kind of it will do for a bit till I get sorted with new lights).
HOWEVER, given position of panniers (position adjustable, but not much), if I fit light to rear of rack, the light can't be clearly seen from the side, as it's actually below the top of the panniers, and recessed between panniers, if you see what I mean) (except if dark, you'd see the glow, obv). It's been this way for a while, but now nights are getting darker, I'd like to change it. SO, I want to raise whichever light I get ABOVE the level of the rack/pannier. Been trying various bodges this evening, with no joy, really.
Advice welcome :okay::smile:

Stick it on the back of a small wedgie saddle bag. The Velcro loops on most of them tend to droop a bit but it's not a hard problem to fix with a bit of bush engineering.

That's fine-ish, but the ocd side of me doesn't like it wobbling about (oo'er)

Fit your main rear lamp under the rear rack. Some will protrude a little for side views. You don't need it visible from the side, just from rear at an angle.
You can add additional rear lamps for side visibility.
Rear rack location is so good, if you have it, use it.

Does the rack have a mounting plate for the lights?

Simplest is to get an old piece of seatpost or similar tubing, cut to length and then bolt onto the plate

Yes it does, but with panniers on, the light ends up recessed between panniers (side view) and below the highest point that panniers reach too, hence my wish to position light up and/or outwards.

That is why I asked

If there is a two bolt standard plate on the rack, then a long piece of tubing mounted horizontally will provide your lateral extension

Otherwise mount tubing vertically to raise above

I should point out that with the SJS one pictured above, you do still need a suitable mounting plate to attach to it, which it seems not all lights come with these days.
