I've just picked up a freebie bike. I've stripped it down (as I'm going to paint it) and noticed something weird. What are these flanges for? There's one either side of the bearing cup.

The flanges are for mounting the forward facing machine gun - thoughtless motorists will be dicing with death when you get your new killing machine on the road.....

They are, of course, the now obsolete 'integrated headset top-nut flange alignment tabs'. They're supposed to line up with the grooble thrust-valve and flig the scroter bim.

I don't know. I think they are made up.

you had me going for a second there! ;) i think i'll take it off tomorrow then! ;)

They look like a bodge to me. Someone needed a bit more space, or an extra washer or something, and used whatever came to hand. I have a few bits like that on my bikes and car.
