Wash in the river like most of the rest of the world.

1. Split washing load into batches of items of similar colours. Wash items of similar colour together - don't mix & match colours in the first place.
2. Why wash at a high temperature? There's very, very little these days that requires washing at high temperature.

Ah, our daughter was bought a top for Christmas, unfortunately it was sent over from the USA so can't take it back to the retailer. Anyhow, I was thinking about putting it on a hot wash to shrink the material, however, want to preserve the colours and stop them from running. I looked on Google and they suggest vinegar and salt.

STOP! Step back from the washing machine... back away!

Now, before you ruin a piece of clothing, what is the item, what is the material it's made from and what are the washing instructions - see labels on garment...

Righty-ho - if it's polyester it is highly unlikely to shrink in the wash. It's also unlikely to have colour running in the wash. So I'd knock your idea on the head from those POV as well. Just how too big is it? Kids grow you know

Quite honestly, I wouldn't attempt to shrink it - cycle tops are usually made from stuff that won't shrink - unless you've paid for a merino wool thing which, if you put in a hot wash, will end up like a thick felt top for a midget  Plus, if you wash it on a hot wash, if it's got any finish that's there to help wicking or some sort of anibacterial finish, washing in a hot wash can damage these.

yea, i agree with Waffly. if it shrinks (which is unlikely given the fibre) it won't be wearable, it will be uncomfortable and likely to go out of shape anyway.

better to grow into it or use it as a nightshirt.
