As a slight deviation from this, what a saviour anti-puncture strips are. I don't know if they're actually called this but they are strips of thin plastic that fit between the innnertube & tyre. My bike came with them pre-fitted.

But these happened one ride. Would have been a double blow out otherwise ==> massive downer, considering I only carried one inner tube.
Rear: yes that's the plastic underneath

Front: no so bad but still straight through the tyre.

I got home without realising there was a problem - I always check my tryes on returning and then I found the above.

Now the story unfolds, I decided that these tyres needed replacing and splashed out on a pair of Continental 4 seasons (better than the ultrasports but not 3x better ). I got snobby about weight and didn't put back the plastic strip - first long run out I went over a large stone and 100m later the front was as flat as anything. And the very odd thing it was like a pinch puncture with two holes either side of the centre, which I've never suffered from before but there was a tiny shard of flint in one of the holes.

Moral: don't get snobby about weight, carry patches as well as tube(s). And my unscientific conclusion folding tyres don't have the sidewall strength of beaded ones.
