Another Winter Clothes thread - Good midlayer for arthritic old wuss?

Winter is coming and this arthritic old wuss is feeling the cold!

Got my hands, legs and head sorted out hopefully but can anyone recommend a good midlayer? I have a basic t-shirt and a Gore Windstopper Jacket or Gore Paclite Gore-tex Jacket but not sure what to put in between.

Would any fleece type thing be ok or should I go for something in particular?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Laugh if you want, but on cold rides, I wear a string vest under a merino wool jersey, with arm warmers, and then my outer layer(s).

These people do great merino jerseys and jackets:

I think a lot depends on how energetic your cycling is. A midlayer fleece under goretex could well be too warm. If you have a thin lightweight fleece (like polartec 100 weight) give it a go, you can always remove it. That's the nice thing about midlayers, easy to experiment with.

But you might find you're fine with just the t-shirt and jacket, if you're a furious peddler!

Beaten to it! I'd recommend one of their vests (Thermos or Ristretto) under a long sleeve merino base layer (Submerino or a Robin Hood).

There are two things that I love to bits and will recommend to anyone, one is Brooks saddles, the other is kit from Ground Effect.

Oh dear, just been spending again on Ground Effect base layers. Their website is so pretty. My husband needed a base layer but I just had to get one for myself as well (in a different colour of course or I'd cop it!)
