Hi all, new member here!

A couple of months ago, I got sick of commuting in my car and decided I wanted to combine fitness with getting to work by purchasing a bike.

Just picked up a Trek Soho S and will be commuting 4-5 times a week doing 12 miles each way on a fairly flat with a few gentle climbs consisting mainly cycle paths. I wanted a SS bike as I wanted a fairly maintenance free bike it fitted the bill perfectly.

Been out today cycling the route to work in glorious sunshine and even though it took me just over an hour to cycle, it was the most fun I've had in ages! It certainly beats my morning cardio sessions in the gym running on the treadmill for 30-45 mins before work. Can't wait to get out on the bike to work whizzing past all the traffic.

Hopefully I'll start to chop down the time it takes me to get to work, I'm 31 years old and have been training in the gym 3-4 times a week and play football or basketball once a week so fairly fit. However, the 1st proper ride today was a wee bit tough as I've not had a bike since 2000.

Only other thing is that it felt a bit weird on a bicycle as I ride a motorbike aswell so took a wee bit getting used to...not to mention I don't have the power to blitz by cars anymore and I can't get my knee down  I suppose a plus is that I don't have to pay for fuel and roadtax on the bicycle!

If anyone is considering a SS hybrid bike for commuting, the Trek Soho S is a fantastic bike, very light, nimble and looks quite nice considering the price (got it for £390). Can't believe it took me so long to get a bicycle again!

The distance I'll be covering with some gentle climbs I could have done with a bike with gears but TBH, I don't miss the gears and as I'm fairly fit, SS is not so bad as I'm using it for exercise so I don't have to do cardio in the gym and just lift weights instead.

My work does a Cycle to work scheme, however you have to register your choice of bike by Nov so as I missed out last year to purchase a bike for '09, I would have had to wait till later in the year to get one for 2010. So best compromise was to buy one now for £390 and when I can use the scheme, I'll get something quite trick to complement the Trek.

Well... You've only just started riding again. You will, on both accounts. I grounded a low rider pannier rack in a turn a few weeks back, and regularly rocket past (parked) cars.

Welcome.

Get a road bike eventually, then you'll soon be chasing big motorbikes down descents in the hills, or riding by them at 30 mph on the flat - you should see their faces...
