Having owned the road bike for a few months, have decided to give the Clipless pedal a try..I've looked at the main clipless FAQ post..and feel I would prefer a double sided MTB pedal with a recessed cleat shoe to walk about in.

Does anyone use a MTB pedal on a road bike..would this be acceptable and could anyone recommend or provide any links to the best shoe/pedal set up...cheers.

I've got Shimano M530 on my road bike. It's perfectly acceptable, and they look the part too IMO

My shoes are Shimano MT51, which I use on both my road and MTB

When you say double sided - do you mean the ability to clip in on both sides of the pedal, or to have one clip in and one platform side so you can wear a pair of trainers too if the mood takes you - I posted the former, ffoeg the latter

I would prefer to clip in on both sides..also do the shoes come already set up or is there another cleat attachment I need to add to the sole of the shoe to start with

M530s are double sided - essentially M520 with a platform, which give a bit more stability under the sole.

IIRC those 'either/'or you mentioned oddities are A530's

There is a cover over the cleat position on the shoe - you prise it off with a stanley knife or similar and the cleat bolts on

Make sure the pedals come with cleats - the shoes don't!

And get SH56 cleats. Very little chance of a 'moment'

520s are great...as a cheapskate I bought a set of Northwave mtb shoes (new) on ebay for £20. Must say that they work really well together.
