I need a new bottom bracket for my Cannondale. The current one is an Octalink (probably 105) and the guy in the Bike Station (local bike charity) measured it as being a 68mm with a 110mm (ish) axle. Can someone confirm that this is what I want?:

The Cannondale has a double by the way.

Cheers,
Matthew

As a quick check, can you take your BB out as it will say on the casing, if not on there it's easy to measure when out of the bike......

That looks right....road bikes are 68mm shells, and if it's 110 axel then this is right - but do check...

You can easily measure the shell - just take a ruler to the BB - it will be either 68mm or 73mm

Thanks for the reply fossy. I'm pretty sure it's a 68 but I think I'll wait 'til I've had a look just in case. I'm waiting on a new crank puller as my cheapo one has proved something of a liability.

Cheers,
Matthew

Grrr, now I can't shift the damned thing. The lockring thingy came out with the standard amount of swearing but the drive side is proving to be a real bugger. I need a bigger and better spanner...

If you have a hollow axle BB you can clamp the tool (loosely) in place using a rear (i.e. long) QR skewer. That makes things easier. You should get a long, large adjustable wrench though.

Thanks for the tip, I actually did just that based on some Googling I did, worked well though because I didn't have the right sized washer for the BB tool side, I used a redundant piece of shower that was lying around.:?:

I gave up with the crappy spanner and bought myself an decent adjustable 12" one. This repair has ended up costing me rather a lot in tools but at least I'll have them for the future, which I wouldn't have if I'd given the money to the LBS to do it. Anyway, it's done and everything went together nicely in the end.
