This news from last week passed me by until I saw a passing mention of it in a piece about the Tour of Romandie just now. Apparently he's been ill for some time...

His legacy in pro cycling is somewhat mixed. Lots of positive influences but I'm sure he'll mainly be remembered for the inglorious Phonak years, picking up where US Postal left off. Really ugly kit too. Interesting that he's never been able to replicate their 'successes' with BMC.
