I can't think of one on android or IOS but in the past pre using my mobile I have used gmap-pedometer.com on the laptop to check routes out.

If all you are wanting to do is check distances then this is a great little tool. All you do is double click your start point and at each intersection to trace your route.

You can buy a digital OS Landranger (1:50,000) map covering the whole of mainland Britain plus islands from Memory Map and download a free Android app to use it. The map is currently available HERE on special offer for £50. It is absolutely brilliant. The only thing that bugs me is that I paid more than that a few weeks ago to upgrade my old version - grrrr!

The map can be installed on 5 devices. I have it on my Android phone, Android tablet, Windows laptop and Windows PC. If you buy a Memory Map GPS you can install the 5th copy on that.

I always plot my routes on my laptop and transfer them to my phone and GPS but I just checked and you can plot them directly in the Android app.

PS I thought that it was not available for iOS but apparently it IS!

Osmand does indeed do it.

Personally, I use the strava website to plot routes, then I extract to gpx to follow in Osmand

Ah - I was looking at that a couple of weeks ago, and downloaded the test version. Wouldn't work - seemed to suck up all available memory, until the PC curled up in disgust and died. Maybe cos it's an ooooooooold PC running on Windows XP.

Maybe I'll try again .................

I'm still running XP on this laptop and it is working fine for me. (2 GB RAM.)

I bought the version on DVD and installed it from that rather than downloading it.
