An odd frustration

About a month ago I decided to upgrade my front mech, to match the rest of my drive train, to a Shimano Deore XT FD M781 model. Since fitting, the settings have just been impossible to make work across my triple crankl. I end up being able to use all three rings with severe chain rub in about 1/2 the settings, or only able to use the middle and outer rings, or only able to use the middle and inner rings. I must have tried, and re tried various settings, cable tensions, combinations and options about 20 times. As a last resort I even started trying to open out the cage by levering it open. Nothing seemed to do any good. Today I gave up, refitted my previous mech, Shimano FD M531 & within ten minutes of fitting, all settings were running smoothly, without issue or any chain rub.

I had a look on the Shimano compatibility chart and the problem may be that the M531 is for use with a 9spd cassette and the M781 is for use with a 10spd, that's maybe all the problem is with the narrower tolerance....

I am ashamed to say that I was unaware that shimano had a compatibility chart. Where would I find such info, ( my internet skills are on a par with the new royal babies computer abilities ) and do they do that with all their parts ?
