Why did they take a car all that way and not bikes?

Cos they're bloody lazy americans.

When they go to the toilet someone will say, "you'll need the 4x4 SUV for the stairs"

It is an interesting question. I wonder how a bike would end up cycling through dust and how the biomechanics differ.

As for the moon missions, probably because they could. The Saturn Vs were far more powerful than anything else built that got used in a proper capacity. Payload wasn't so much of a problem as it is now.

..i wonder if a lunar bike would be steel or carbon...kind of irrelevant??

I think I might design a lunar touring bike...you know just in case somebody might need one...

..It would have a lead frame and wheels as wide as you like for all that lunar dust...it would need panniers...which could be HUGE and able to carry rocks of immense proportions with just a paper clip to fasten them to the bike. In fact I could make it look so dam ugly I would have to call it the ..wait for it.....

As they landed near the sea of tranquillity they were probably concerned about the state of the roads as many costal roads suffer quite badly from erosion.
Examples of which can be clearly seen around many parts of Kent.
The puncture fairy was also rumoured to frequent the area!

I'd say a few reasons really like the amount of rock they had to carry back to the LEM. The risk of the suits coming apart, the fact they also ran them at approx 3psi to maintain flexibility in them so they didn't blow up like sausages and limit mobility - so the astronauts would be breathless with even mild exertion, the radio equipment wasn't exactly compact at that time and they had to maintain a permanent uplink to the command module as well.

Many reasons more which don't spring to mind

They sell them in JJBs don't they ;)

Lunar bike, heavy frame, wide wheels. Already in production.
