Am I out of touch with prices?

When I bought my Secteur Elite in 2010 and was looking for shoes I bought the Specialized BG Comp MTB Shoes (as shown below) because they fit me great and are very comfy, yes they cost around £100 but my primary concern was comfort not price.

I wear these shoes always when I am out on my Road bike.

I also have the Specialized Taho (as below) I started off with these but dont wear them anymore as I prefer the shoes above, these cost about £45.

I have these boots that I use on my hybrid/MTB in winter, I got these in a sale in the middle of summer for half price £60.

I also have a couple of pairs of Lidl cycling shoes. I have worn one pair once they cost something like £10-£15.

So going by that the cheap Lidl ones turned out to be a waste of money and the specialized ones were a good buy as I wear them all the time when out on my road bike.

One piece of advice would be go to actual shops and try on different makes of shoes and see which ones fit you best, you will find the sizes vary according to manufacturers so unless I knew for sure a shoe was going to fit I would always buy them from a shop in person.

I read that article, and had similar thoughts. Regardless, it doesn't stop me wanting a pair of Louis Garneau Winter Road Shoes - the only problem is I don't know if they are SPD-SL compatible. The article doesn't say. I've posed a question on evanscycles asking this question. If they were I'd get some now, as Evans have them at 89.99 instead of the quoted 119!

Interestingly, cycling shoes are the only shoes I own where I don't mind spending a bit extra!

I think we're all probably guilty of this for all kinds of cycling gear - not just shoes!

Happy to drop £100+ on a cycling jacket if it's all high tech etc without a second thought.

A regular jacket for wearing out and about would have to be extraordinarily nice and guarantee me success with potential employers and the opposite sex alike to consider paying £100!

£50 on a tshirt would be OUTRAGEOUS. £50 on a short sleeve jersey is yeah fine what problem?

A lot depends on your disposable income, my last one's were £145 real price my price £85 I have in the past paid a lot more. Seems good value when you take all things into consideration, as a business person I do understand overheads.

Yes it's affordable, my winter boots cost more that that five years ago, they've proved well worth it it terms of warmth and comfort, and good value.
Buying anything and getting plenty of use from it usually makes it good value in my book. I've been getting the bus to work this last week because my usual route is so icy, it costs me £7.60 a day, it's reminded me just how affordable cycling is.
