I've been keeping an eye out for some cheapish MTB shoes for some time now so was pretty interested in the recent Cycling Active test. The subsequent googling suggested that some considered the £100 mark to be "affordable". This surprised me but may explain why I haven't found any shoes that both interested me and were in my price range!

Would you consider £100 to be affordable?

Mine were £55, much more affordable. Shop around, LBS will discount to get the sale, times are tough

eBay, about £40. Search for "Diadora cycling". I found a seller who would accept a refund if they didn't fit quite right, they did though and have been excellent.

I know cheap mtb shoes can be found it sales, etc. I'm not looking for pointers.

I'm just intrigued as to the general consensus on affordable.

£100 isn't affordable and is just a load of marketing to make you think you need to spend £100 - similar to how bikes with a £1250 price tag are labelled as 'entry level'.

I usually spend a max of £50 on cycling shoes. I certainly like the look of some more expensive shoes but could never afford to buy them. All comes down to income and amounts of disposable cash. A young single person on a decent salary or a fat cat earning 100k might think £200 was very cheap for shoes!

Cycling plus is aimed more at the serious cyclist and the mid lie crisis MAMIL crowd i think nowadays , when you read most of their reviews they only look at the bling , if you half their budget your not far off : )

I use Lidl shoes for commuting and their perfectly serviceable , my "nice " shoes i got off ebay for less than £20 .

I picked up my Lake MTB shoes for about £45 down from £80 is a sale. My Spech Pro Carbon road shoes were considerably more expensive - about £140.

So, general consensus seems to be so far '£100? Affordable? Pah!'

Good, I know I'm tight but it did seem a lot of dosh to me.

I guess affordable depends on whether or not £100 is chump change to you or an amount that might take a while to save.

I have not purchased a pair and am looking to do so when i sort a bike out (newbie) but in my eyes once you get beyond the £50-60 mark it does not look like you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. They look like a relatively simple shoe to me with a basic sole construction and no waterproofing.

My sister bought me a pair of SPD cycling shoes for about £15 from ALDI and I've been using them for about 3 years with no problems - that is affordable!

(I got a pair of SIDI road bike shoes for about £25 because my LBS couldn't shift them. They said they were too big to be much in demand, but I'm only a UK10 which doesn't exactly make me Big-Foot!)

Affordable is very subjective

My road shoes were £110 reduced from £170 - so i guess that makes them affordable considering i bought them - but that doesn't mean i dont think they were expensive!
