Am I mad ???

Free-wheeling into oblivion...
I am trying to think up a cycling-related challenge to raise money for charity at work... how does this one sound ?

Spinning bike (in the work's air conditioned gym), team of 4 victims riders and a target of 500 miles in 24 hours.

This is only an average of 20.8mph which should be more than achievable, even counting for rider changes etc.
(How fast can you ride on a spinning bike ?)

I suspect the biggest issue is going to be boredom, but we have satellite TV and music in the gym and shifts of an hour on, three hours off should give plenty of time for rest / food / showers etc.

Is this too easy, or just madness ?
Any thoughts ?

EDIT - probably should have put this in health, fitness & training... oops

Sounds like a nice challenge but I guess the best thing to do is find a challenge that people can relate to.

A cyclist knows how tough that sounds, and the chief hard part will be the monotony as well as the spinning task. As it's on a stationary bike it doesn't really sound as tough and you may get a few gym rats that think a 15 minute blast at 25mph is very achievable.

Anyway keep thinking I'm sure the CC people will chip in more ideas.

Very doable when in a team of 4 taking it in turns.

How easy or difficult it will be depends so much on the resistance / level you put the bike at...also depends on what type of bike it is - on the easy settings on some spin bikes you could get an average mph that boardman and cancellara would be proud of and finish off the challenge with hours to spare. Whereas on the harder settings you wont get close to completing the challenge. Some static bikes give a more accurate representation of gearing, cadence and speed than this though.

Because of the variance in different machines then the distance covered isn't the big achievement it is the time you are putting in to doing it, if you manage 400 miles or 600 they are both a good achievement .

AFAIK the British solo record out on the roads is held by John Warnock at just over 520 miles.

One of the departments at work arranged a 24-hour relay on an exercise bike in the staff canteen to ride 'from our workplace to landsend'. The local gym loaned the bike. I believe it was quite successful.
