Hi,

The rear mech on my Trek 4300 decided to self-destruct today & took out the alloy hanger with it.
Looking at new mechs online & possibly the opportunity for a bit of an upgrade - none of the mechs have a hanger so I need to buy this as well. What a crazy concept where each manuacturer has dozens of designs, multiplied by the no. of manufacturers....
After too long googling, I looked up a convenient Trek dealer to be told that they couldn't even identify the item by the bike model & year, could I bring the pieces in & that it would be about £20 - as much as the mech its supposed to save.
Rant over
What I actually wanted to ask was does anyone know how interchangeable these things are or am I tied to Trek, and/or know of a good source of these. I only want a std item, not CNC/laser cut beastie
TIA

Frustrating , I know from bitter expereince. but it is not the mech but the frame it saves. A steel integral hanger can be bent back into shape if bent - an aluminium one cannot, it breaks! hence, sacrificial aluminium hanger to protect the frame.

You can get pattern ones to fit Trek (or other bikes) but not made by them. Try gearmechhanger.com for example - they have one for a Trek4300 for 19 quid.. IME one shape of hanger will fit several different bikes from the same manufacturer.

I have just bought one of those at £21 to replace the hanger on Gti Junior's alu bike. The bent hanger was a cheap forged item, quite roughly made whereas the replacement is a precisely CNC machined quality item. Thanks to the better quality of the replacement I actually had to do quite a bit of careful filing to the dropout to get it to fit right and sit flat against the dropout face.

Hi,
Thanks for the info & links. I've only just logged in to the forum & am taken aback by the time you have all taken to help. As it happens, Trek UK came back to me with a part no. (230026), mine didn't have any ID marks but they now do. I googled it whilst I has having my brekky & found Evans did it for £16 but they were pipped by a place called Pedal On in Reading - never come across them before- anyway, I ordered it for just over £13 inc postage. WHS had them (pattern presumably) for a tenner inc postage but I couldn't positively ID it so plumped for the certain option. I'm watching the pennies here as I'm just about to shell out for a new engine (The car in front is a Toyota if its belching smoke & the oil rings fail prematurely). Bit gutted really - main mode of transport fails then the bike. Just waiting for my legs to fall off.....

PK99 - hadn't thought of that! I tend to be behind the curve somewhat, my last bike was steel & the mech bolted straight on.

Skol- I spent ages with the pieces looking @ all the offerings, which is partly why I turned to the forum. Mine had been ripped open and I couldn't tell how the beak part went.
Cheers
