All Was Going Well, 'Til.

Just back from a 16.5 mile circular ride on my winter/work bike, nice and steady on a bright autumn morning and all is well with the world. Then about 3 miles from home the rear hub decided to start wobbling, I limped home.
Had a quick check and the cone nuts seem tight enough, cannot see any damage. Think I'm going to have to strip the hub and check the bearings.
But unlike the front wheel which has a QR spindle the rear is good old fashioned 15mm A/F nuts.
So I am now thinking should I bother or just upgrade to a new QR rear wheel. The rear cassette and dérailleur are fine and usable.
Any thoughts, brothers and sisters?
Thanks in advance.

Bent axle, maybe? I had one once--apparently hollow axles with QRs are stronger than solid bolted ones..?

I thought bent axles on the rear where a big problem for hubs that take a freewheel instead of a cassette.
Before I knew about the "design" flaw I broke two and bent one, I upgraded my rear wheel and no longer have the problem.

Could possibly be a broken axle, that happened to me years ago, heard a crack while cycling, nuts where tight and cones where tight but I could actually rock the wheel from side to side.

Thanks folks, looking like it will be Tuesday before I get chance to strip it down, lucky me working the next three nights:sad:.
No doubt I will get the tools out and find it is not as bad as I feared at first!
Now where did I see the Shimano freewheel tool? Or was it a Suntour I saw?
Thanks.

Boo hoo broken axle!
Ah well, think I will be using the old reliable 84' Raleigh Clubman for a while. It will probably be a better winter training bike anyway!
Every cloud etc.
Will replace the axle later in the month, not enough time/daylight with work, rides and winter nights pulling in.
Thanks again fellow velophiles:smile:.
